In our Intermediate Wheel Throwing Pottery Class in San Diego at Wheel & Fire Pottery, students will cover the step-by-step process of throwing larger, taller forms, adding variation to cylinders and serving bowls, making handles, and shaping vases and vessels. We’ll explore underglaze techniques like relief, scraffito, and various glaze combinations.
This class is designed for those with prior experience on the wheel or completion of Intro to Pottery Wheel. Students will build on foundational skills like wedging, centering, and raising walls, and there will be plenty of time for specific questions and project-based feedback.
Pre-requisite: Ability to center 3 lbs. of clay, throw small bowls, or completion of Intro to Pottery Wheel.

Duration: Four weekly class sessions, each lasting two hours (total of 8 hours of guided instruction):
- Week 1: Class Session 1: Saturday, Jan. 4th - 01/04/2025 - 10AM-12PM
- Week 2: Class Session 2: Saturday, Jan. 11th - 01/11/2025 - 10AM-12PM
- Week 3: Class Session 3: Saturday, Jan. 18th - 01/18/2025 - 10AM-12PM
- Week 4: Class Session 4: Saturday, Jan. 25th - 01/25/2025 - 10AM-12PM
Pottery Studio Access:
Enrollment includes unlimited 24/7 access to our pottery studio (excluding designated class times) for the duration of the course, allowing you to practice and refine your skills, and connect with the San Diego pottery community.
What You'll Learn:
By the end of Intermediate Wheel Throwing, students will be able to throw cylinders at least 6" tall, form vases or vessels with varied form, attach handles to smaller forms, and apply more intricate surface decoration and glazing techniques.
Pottery Class Outline:
- Week 1: Review of centering and basic shaping, introduction to larger forms, and understanding wall thickness, centering larger amounts of clay.
- Week 2: Throwing techniques for large bowls and cylinders, exploring form and function, techniques for raising more clay.
- Week 3: Advanced trimming techniques, adding handles, and surface decoration methods like carving and stamping.
- Week 4: Glazing techniques for more complex pieces, sgraffito, underglaze techniques, final demonstrations, and individual project time.
Materials Included in Pottery Class:
- Each student receives 25 pounds of clay for use during the course.
- Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
- Students receive keycode access to the studio on the first day of class.

General Class Outline
Intermediate Wheelthrowing
Week 1 (2 hours)
Studio orientation, review of wedging, centering, pulling, wedging clay, as well as differences in centering and pulling larger amounts of clay for cylinders and vases
Week 2 (2 hours)
Explore techniques for raising more clay; lip compression on vases; using ribs and tools to shape cylinder; continued cylinder & vase demonstrations and guided practice; large serving bowl demonstration; handle formation and design.
Week 3 (2 hours)
Best practices for trimming large earthenware forms; vase enclosure demonstration; throwing consistent wall-width; and handle attachments.
All earthenware due on class shelf for bisque-firing at least 48 hours prior to final class.
Week 4: (2 hours)
Underglazing techniques, scraffito demonstration and applications, final glaze questions; final demonstrations; continued vase techniques and lip decoration.
Final glazed stoneware due 48 hours after final class.
